Apical resection

Apical resection is a surgical procedure that removes the root tip of a tooth and infected bone tissue. It is performed when root canal treatment has not eradicated the infection, or when a fixed prosthesis prevents access to the roots.

The treatment

Under local anaesthetic, the gum is incised to gain access to the infected site and the root tip. The root tip is severed and the infected bone around the root is removed. The canal orifice is enlarged and blocked to make it watertight. The bone will usually be completely reformed within a year.
